My First Week Back at School: A Journey of Teamwork and Resilience

The first week back at school is always filled with excitement, new beginnings, and anticipation, but this year was different. I walked into a new classroom, only to find that the teacher who had been hired was not available this week. It was an unexpected challenge, but it quickly became a valuable lesson in teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability.

Stepping Up: Expanding My Role as a Paraprofessional

As a paraprofessional, my typical role is to support the teacher and work with students individually or in small groups. However, this week, my responsibilities expanded significantly. With no teacher to lead the class, it was essential to maintain the students’ routine and minimize disruptions. One of my biggest concerns was that if we didn’t establish strong connections with the students right away, it would be difficult to regain their focus for the rest of the year. To address this, we reached out to the other teachers for assistance, and they quickly stepped in to ensure the students remained engaged and focused. The administration also ensured that a certified teacher was present in the room. It became a true team effort, and I was deeply impressed by how well everyone collaborated to create a stable and productive learning environment for the students.

Throughout the week, we worked tirelessly to provide a structured yet engaging atmosphere. We organized various learning activities, introduced hands-on experiences, and made sure each student followed a clear daily routine. It wasn’t easy—there were moments of uncertainty and chaos—but the team’s energy and determination kept us motivated.

How a SPED Teacher Helped Create a Morning Routine for Our Students

A key part of this process was the collaboration with a SPED teacher I previously worked with. When I first joined the classroom, I noticed a need for a daily routine that would set students up for success each day. Even though she was running her own 5th-grade classroom, she went above and beyond to ensure our students had a smooth and positive start to their day.

She took the time to design detailed lesson plans and visual schedules that would guide us through the morning transition. These weren’t generic routines; they were specifically tailored to meet the needs of the students in our classroom. She knew exactly what they needed to feel comfortable and settled, and she made sure we had everything necessary to implement those routines seamlessly.

Despite her busy schedule, she regularly checked in with us, offering suggestions and troubleshooting any potential challenges. Whether it was providing visual reminders for the students, incorporating calming activities, or breaking tasks into manageable steps, she thought of it all. Her commitment to the well-being of our students was evident in everything she did.

The Power of Teamwork: Why Teaching is About Flexibility

By the end of the week, I was exhausted, but also filled with a deep sense of accomplishment. We made it through, not because of one individual, but because everyone came together and worked as a team. It wasn’t the start I had expected, but in some ways, it was better.

This experience reminded me that teaching isn’t just about following a plan—it’s about being flexible, working together, and always prioritizing the students’ needs. I’m excited to continue working with this fantastic team and to see how we grow together in the coming weeks.
